Dear Auntie Valerie by Deborah Hugill - February 2010

l - r Deborah Hugill, Ann McMorris and Diane Parsons

'Auntie Valerie' is the pseudonym of 1950s agony aunt, Miss Livingstone, who has a long running column in Your Friend magazine. Her new secretary, Phyllis, is proving rather dense and Miss Livingstone is beginning to despair. But a bigger problem, what Sherlock Holmes might call a three pipe problem, is about to be presented to 'Auntie Valerie'. When Miss Lydia Porter calls at the offices of Your Friend magazine, she reveals the devastating information that she is Miss Livingstone's illegitimate daughter, adopted at birth.

Initially hostile to each other, they explore how they have been linked over the years through letters to the problem page of Your Friend, and ultimately come to see a way forward to, perhaps, know each other better.

The play was directed by Deborah Hugill.

It was runner up at the Festival and was awarded Best Actress (Diane Parsons), Best Supporting Actress (Ann McMorris) and the Adjudicator's Cup for writing and direction (Deborah Hugill).
